Flower:
Campanulate, pink with light pink to white margins (yellow/white) - sensitive.
Fruit:
Cylindric to clavate, pink to red.
Foliage:
Tufted areolar hairs, blue/green stems.
Height:
3-6 cm above ground, root to 30 cm.
Uses:
Medicinal (painful joints, toothache, pain in child-birth, fever, breast pain, skin disease, rheumatism, diabetes, colds, blindness, neurasthenia, hysteria and asthma. &used for shamanic healing. Peyote has also been shown to have antibiotic activity against a wide variety of bacteria including some penicillin resistant strains), Psychotropic, Sacred.

Minimum Temperature:
USDA zone: 9 (10 to 20°F, down to about -6°C, but keep dry during winter resting period).

Lophophora species germinate best between 70 and 80°F.

Sterile containers, tools and media are recommended - Lophophora are slow growing - moss, algae and mould could be a problem if not discouraged.

Free draining seed compost with a top layer of fine grit to prevent moss and algae, firm gently with a flat object such as a match-box.

High humidity at all times; water from below or mist gently to avoid disturbing seeds - the container may be covered with a sheet of glass or a plastic bag to maintain the humidity.

Requires light (but not direct sunlight as this will dry the surface of the compost).

Surface sow and press gently into the fine grit with a flat object.

Maintain the humidity until the second year when the small plants are established then harden off and grow on in full sun in moisture retentive but well drained moderately fertile and preferably calcareous soil.
